HomeOne & One with Kevin Lamey
Waterhousefc.com : Kevin, football!!, why, when, and where did it all start?K.L. : From an early age I developed a passion for the game as far back as basic school the Bob Allen Basic School in Swallowfield, I can remember loving the game so much that I would be punished by my parents for getting home late in the evenings many a time after staying back to play football, but I just enjoyed football from then. Waterhousefc.com : So your first represented team was from back then?
K.L. : Well no not really, the first team I playeed for on a representative basis was Papine Secondary in the Secondary School's Competition, I then got a scholarship to KTHS (Kingston Technical High School) where I played for them in the Manning Cup Competition for two years.
Waterhousefc.com : Then where to after KTHS?
K.L. : I played some Major league football in the KASAFA Competition for Swallowfield.
Waterhousefc.com : How successful were you for Swallowfield?
K.L. : I scored a couple of goals for Swallowfield not many as I did not play an attacking role until I met Jeffrey Maxwell at Waterhoue in 1994, who practically transformed me into an attacking player as I figure he saw goal scoring potentials in me.
Waterhousefc.com : So you started here at Waterhouse in 1994, any idea as to your match and goal statistics to date - last year alone you scored 22 goals a few of which I was privy to witness, you just seem to know where those uprights are!!?
K.L. : I have played roughly 300 games for the club and have scored approximately 250 goals during that period.
Waterhousefc.com : Have any of those goals stood out in your memory?
K.L. : Most definitely the two I scored against Seba to win the club's first National Premiership in 1998.
Waterhousefc.com : And any memorable moments you cherish while here at Waterhouse?
K.L. : That same Championship game against Seba FC was an occasion that I will never forget especially with my contribution in enabling the club to be crowned Premiership winners in 1998.
Waterhousefc.com : On the other side of the coin any moments or occasions that you would like to quickly forget?
K.L. : Yes, the loss of our former coach Peter Cargill, remembering that we left overnight for MoBay to play a game and his "Peter Cargill's" vehicle was just ahead of us to come upon the mangled vehicle, We did our best took him out of the vehicle and sped him off to the hospital hoping for the best only to lose him in the final analysis is my saddest moment in my footballing career.
Waterhousefc.com : I figure you have seen many players during your career.. Who would you say is your model player both locally and internationally?
K.L. : Well my most admired footballer is Pele, ironically as a youngster at Swallowfield I used to be called Pele a nickname given to me by one of my former coaches, G. Coley, I guess that it was because of my slight resembelance to the great player. A few players locally have inspired me none moreso than "Bingie Blair", he has taught me a lot about the game both on and off the field.
Waterhousefc.com : Any clubs or teams that you really love and admire?
K.L. : Oh yeah!!. most definitely Arsenal, in Arsenal I see a lot of flair, a lot of passing, they play a brand of football that is easy on the eye and one that we here at Waterhouse try to emulate with the passion and all!.
Waterhousefc.com : Kevin we have spoken a bit about your background, career etc., tell me about the season just past, with you walking away with 5 category awards the most important probably being the season's MVP, tell us about it!!
K.L. : Looking back firstly I must thank the Lord, because it is his blessing that brought us through - at one point Harbour View was 13 points ahead. But after beating Harbour View twice, in the Midseason final and the Jackie Bell KO, we really believed that we could challenge for the Championship, and I believe that this also inspired the other teams against them. I believe though that the turning point came in the match against Reno, when with 15 minutes of playing time to go we were trailing 0-2, and rising to the occasion to win 3-2 was quite significant. The players all met and decided that with a belief in God and a belief in our ability to overcome all comers really did it for the Club.
Waterhousefc.com : I am gonna touch on a sore issue of the fans here at Waterhoue, they believe that you have not been given your fair share of calls to the National Team, what say you?
K.L. : Well my first call was back in 1997 with Rene Simoes, I have since then been in and out of the team, 99-2000, why I have not been really asked to contribute more to me is unexplainable, as I have been averaging 20 or more goals per season, and the greatest thing for me is to represent my Country, I have never given up and will be willing and ready to contribute if given the opportunity, although I am presently preparing with the National team for the upcoming Digicel Cup, I am trying to keep my fitness level up as I am trying to use the occasion if given a chance to catch the eyes of International scouts as I would really love to play professional football to propel my career.
Waterhousefc.com : I noticed in the last season you were used somewhat like a super-sub, does that have anything to do with your fitness level??
K.L. : No not really, more strategy than anything else. You see I work hard to keep my fitness level at a point even during the off season I do a lot of work on my own, I play a lot of Basketball this I regard as my side Sport and it helps to develop my fitness level and structure!!.
Waterhousefc.com : The Waterhouse/Drewsland community how much of an impact have they had on your career?
K.L. : I like Waterhouse the people are passionate about their football, and our relationship is very much like a marriage - The community supports me tremendously and I dont think a player can ask for much more from a community, they want to see you do well at all times and sometimes even when we win a game 2 or 3 nil they are sometimes not pleased because they do believe that the talent in the team should produce more. The community is so passionate about the club that fans even paint their houses in the yellow and blue colours of the club!.
Waterhousefc.com : So what are you looking forward to in the upcoming season?
K.L. : Well the usual preparations are taking place other than that I hav'nt given it much thought as presently I am trying to earn a professional contract, even for free, as I believe that with my talent people far and wide need to see me!
Waterhousefc.com : Kevin thank you very much for your time, and all the best in your future endeavours and ambitions.
K.L. : You are welcome.print this page
